George Descombes Brouilly VV Gamay Noir 2019
George Descombes, part of the equivalent of the Big Four of Natural Thrashers of Beaujolais back in the day. Turning a region, a grape and a style of drink into something equally drinkable and contemplative. No easy feat, but executed perfectly.
Notes from the Guardfather:
Every year this is one of the great wines of Beaujolais by all measures - from 2018 the first hint at quality is, as usual, the vibrant colour you can see literally the richness and depth, then the billowing perfume. Georges produced superb 2018 wines, none of the heaviness found in some of the wines of his peers, his are very fresh - aromas are bright and crystal clear with entrancing aromas of red/black cherries and hints of sweet kirsch. The taste is energetic, fresh and focused, with juicy fruit, fresh acidity and a firm mineral grip. The hot 2018 vintage has provided serious concentration but it has beautiful tension, balance and length. To me, this is perfect Cru Beaujolais from a master - a bargain for what it is.
