Forlorn Hope Queen of the Sierra Amber 2020
Mat Rorick cuts a striking image, he is equal parts Henry Rollins, Lemmy & Johnny Cash. Before COVID times Mat would split the year between his home winery in the Sierra Foothills, and in South Australia, creating some ultra crushable drops. We managed to snag a little bit of that last release as well, we also have a pretty cool international project with this crew coming out soon...
Here's the lowdown from the FH gang:
The Queen of the Sierra wines are a celebration of the steep limestone and schist slopes of Rorick Heritage Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills. Made from 100% Estate grown fruit, they are organically farmed, hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented by native yeasts, unfiltered and unfined, with nothing added but minimal effective sulfur. These are honest and pure California estate wines made with soul that are approachable in price as well as in the glass.
Assembled from the fruit of organically-farmed Verdelho, Albarino, Muscat and Chardonnay vines on a single vineyard in the Sierra Foothills, this example from Matthew Rorick is one we really like. Fermented using native yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur as the only addition, this is a classic example of "hands-off winemaking." With white cherry, stone, grapefruit zest, peach pit, kumquat and gravel nuances playing out on a long tannic finish, there is a robust texture here that belies the refreshing 12% ABV. Very incisive and intense on the palate, this wine is about texture, mouthfeel and minerality rather than fruity simplicity.
