Momento Mori Give Up the Ghost 2019
Dane Johns of Momento Mori is a wizard when it comes to making wine, he sources hard to find varietals, making highly sought after and rare wines that are full of as much magic as they are of flavour. There is never much around, so be quick.
Some words from the wizard himself below...
I’ll keep this one brief. I have a strong love for Greco di Tufo & this is a special wine for me. There is not a lot of Greco di Tufo grown in Australia. In fact I am not aware of any plantings other than this handful of rows grown in Heathcote. (I could be wrong though) Needless to say this cuvee was treated with the respect and care it deserved.
I won’t divulge too much regarding the treatment of this wine other than it spent 10 months on skins, all in stainless steel and was moved only by gravity.
And as per usual there were no additions.
This wine was not pressed but had the free run juice “drained” off. A particularly expensive way to make wine but I think the results speak for themselves. Unfortunately though this also means there was not much of it so allocations will again be small.
The nose is very refined and complex with a dominating feel of an alpine forest with
notes of pine resin, nettle, fresh cut herbs, uplifting florals and a lemon citrus that note that holds it all together
The palate is much of the same and is delicate and fine whilst having great energy and harmonious balance with nothing out of place.
An extremely structured wine that will age tremendously well and really becomes defined with some air. It is also a very food friendly wine.
It has great acidity, freshness and salinity with super-fine chalky tannins to round it out.
A superbly balanced and complex wine,
