BK Wines Ripasso 2020
BK is a good friend of ours, one of the most grounded people, who also happens to skate a lot, be a good dad and make amazing wines. He is one of the cornerstones of natural winemaking in the Adelaide Hills, bringing purposeful touch to unwieldy styles as well as effortlessly delivering world-class fine wine. We love you BK!
The story of this is best told by the man himself:
This is a sort of complicated story so stick with us for a moment. Somewhere between Valpolicella and Amarone you will find traditional Italian Ripasso: concentrated, bitter Amarone is made from dried Valpolicella grapes, the skins of which are then blended back with Valpolicella to be revinified into Ripasso. In the BK Wines version of the game, however, the rules have been turned around and vintages ignored. 2015 Shiraz in barrel has been revinified with two years-worth of reserved lees and pressed 2020 Pinot Noir skins. So sort of a Ripasso in reverse with older wines over newer pressings. Despite the distinct lack of Italian varietals, the result is oddly Nebbiolo-esque, with violets and wild herbs and a soft, chewy tannic structure. In alchemy, the goal is to produce something genuinely new from basic substances – ideally gold from base metals. BK Ripasso NV is an alchemist’s glinting vinous dream come true.
