Owen Latta got thrust head first into winemaking at the young age of 15. His father had had an accident that affected his sense of smell and taste, and young Owen stepped in, making wine under his dad’s instruction while he recovered on the sidelines. He would make wine before and after school, trying to keep out of trouble for showing up with red wine stains on his uniform. Never drinking, always tasting of course!
He went on to study at Charles Sturt University, before returning full-time to the family winery in 2007, where he looks after both Eastern Peake - which produces some of the finest wines out of Victoria, as well as his own label LattaVino which lends itself to more experimental, genre-bending styles.
His output for Latta is prolific, he loves to tinker and push the envelope with his wines, while still maintaining true expression of place and fruit. He named one of his more twisty-turny releases after a King Gizz song upon meeting them at one of their shows in Ballarat one year. The parallels are very easy to draw between the two: Extremely talented, with the insane ability to jump between many styles while investing the same high-energy and focus into each.
These never last long, but what a ride while they’re here.
